Hartwood is a small village in north central Virginia (USA) ... not a village in the most literal sense, you understand ... it's really only a Post Office, a church, and a bunch of farms. It's a very beautiful, very rural place to live, and I love it here.
This is our house. It was built in 1848.
This blog started two years ago as a way for me to document what was happening in my rose gardens and at my rose nursery. I grow 900 different types of heirloom and modern roses, and there always seemed to be something to interesting going on. As I learned about my roses, I wanted to share what I learned on my blog. (A few weeks ago, I did a post about how to prune and train rambler roses, for example.)
This is not a fake photo. It's what my Rose Field REALLY looks like in May and June.
I love photography, and my roses are very willing subjects. During warm weather, I can often be found outdoors photographing my gardens. I can think of no better way to spend a day than being surrounded by roses. My pets are also featured in my photos. We currently have 4 indoor cats, 1 outdoor cat, and 2 retired racing greyhounds. (I worked in greyhound rescue for many years. Friends and I now run Greyhounds Rock, a nonprofit charity that raises money for canine cancer treatment and research. The link to our web site is on my sidebar.)
This is my friend Kim's dog, TJ, who is currently undergoing treatment for Osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
As time went by, I began to include a bit of history and some DIY with respect to the restoration of our old house. We bought this house in 2002, and we spent 5 full years on a whole house renovation before we could move in. I was the general contractor, I did all of the design work, and I did much of the demolition, paint stripping, and carpentry work myself. This is my dream house, in my dream location, and I feel blessed to wake up here every morning. Things are far from finished, so sometimes I have blog posts devoted to construction and decorating projects, as well as subjects specific to old house issues. (I did a tutorial in a post just last week about how to install a subway tile backsplash.) Take a look at the sidebar, and you will find links to blog posts that introduced some of the rooms of our house, our barn, and the evolution of the house itself.
A really bad flash photo of me, say "Cheese", taken by the Husband ... as I was working to cut and install the top of my rolling work island. Click HERE to see the full post.
As part of the One World, One Heart event, each participating blog is offering a giveaway to the readers who visit. To celebrate warmth of our Hartwood country setting, I am offering item an item designed to chase away the winter chill ... a hand-crocheted scarf, with roses (of course) will be sent to the lucky winner.
Everyone who has a blog is eligible to enter. Leave a comment on this post, including a way for me to contact you ... it's as simple as that. I will draw the winner and contact them on the evening of February 17.
Thank you, again, for stopping by to visit. If you like what you see, I would be honored to have you come back to visit again from time to time. Hartwood is a beautiful, friendly place, and I try to share that feeling to my readers.
Sincerely,
Connie
P.S. I post here at least every day or two. This post is going to get a little bit stale, as One World One Heart continues through February 17th. If you want, click HERE to go to my most recent post and you can see what else is going on around here.
This giveway is now closed. Thank you, all of you, for dropping by to see what my blog is all about.
Your blog is beautiful and everything a blog SHOULD be. Love visiting you here!

Lovely stuff! Isn't renovation fun? We've been in ours for just over a year now. We have a long way to go.
ReplyDeleteThis spring, i want to start a formal Italian-style rose garden (small) in front of the house in red and white. Any suggestions? I am not rose knowledgeable at all!
You know how much I love your blog! I have been out of the loop for the last two weeks because my 27 year old kitty became sick and passed away. I have been absolutely heartbroken and really not in good shape for blogging. I'm sure you understand. This is my first day back and I had to come say "Hi". It is always so wonderful to see your beautiful pictures and your inspiring words.
ReplyDeleteOh Connie, how could I possibly have missed that fact that you live in that amazingly gorgeous house? I'm literally drooling *wipes keyboard* and not just a little bit jealous.

Hello Connie,
ReplyDeleteI had a most enjoyable time getting to know you through your blog today. I can smell the roses while I take a fantasy walk through the fields and gardens. Hmm, heavenly. I've always loved the "wilder" varieties, except for Sterlings, my very fave. Not very aromatic but so lovely, extravagent. The bookstore I work at sponsors the Greyhound Rescue League once a month. Some amazing dogs up for adoption and care. I love the home you have created, thank you for saving it for all the ages! Our histories are becoming obsolete to our young people. I think the scarf you've crocheted is beautiful and keeps with the ideals of your homelife. Offering beauty, warmth and comfort. Tina

ReplyDeleteThe scarf is beautiful and your home is stunning. I always wanted to live in an old two storey house However- these days I would find all those stairs challenging so I will have to admire your home from afar.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you are having a great OWOH festival and finding the opportunity to visit some of the other participants. There is much to view and be inspired by..

Photography is a passion of mine and one of my favorite things to take pictures of is flowers...they are so willing aren't they...LOL! We rescued our Great Dane/Pit Bull mix and will adopt another dog again. I think rescue animals make the best kind. Hi, I want to read more on your pruning of roses and learn more about roses. I have a rose that is a cutting of the bush that my great grandmother brought with her on a flat boat to marry my great grandfather. I feel lucky to have this bush but I really don;t know how to take care of it. Also I would love to find the actual name of the rose. I would love to win your giveaway. Please visit my blog and see my giveaways.

Hi Connie,
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, "noreply-comment@blogger.com" is a real downer, as I -- just like you -- tend to answer my comments via email. Hah! Great minds think alike... But I disgress...
I really like your house, but even more than that I like how much free land there is... Gardening must be a challenge, but then again such a free view and the wonderful garden is really rewarding! I guess I have to follow your blog, so that I can enjoy everything along with you. :)
Thanks also for the chance to win the lovely scarf with roses -- it's a treasure!
Greetings from Germany,
Birgit

Hey Connie,
ReplyDeleteI think old houses are the best. Yours is beautiful and your rose field is stunning. Planting more rose bushes this spring is now on my to-do list.
Your scarf is lovely. Please count me in.

Connie! I'm so glad I found you! Your blog is just wonderful! We have so much in common...I am also restoring a historic home. Ours was built in 1869. Have you discovered that living in and restoring an old house is a practice in patience?! You either love them and are in for the long haul, or you just don't attempt it. It's a good thing my husband and I are persistent and a little crazy, otherwise we would have abandoned this particular project a few years ago! HA! We are also big supporters of our local Humane Society and perform rescues of precious furry friends on a consistent basis. We live with our sweet animals, two dogs, two cats and various other critters that find their way to us. Both my husband and I are artists who work at other jobs by day and practice our craft in the evenings...after house projects, time with our sweet son, general upkeep on animals and said house, and a bit of time for conversation. In other words, we work that in where we can...even if it means in the wee hours of the morning. I bet you know how that is!
ReplyDeleteThe scarf is absolutely gorgeous, and you are going to make one lucky person very happy!!! I certainly hope it's me, but even if it's not, I feel as though I've won a prize by finding your lovely blog. I'm signing up to follow you so that I can come back and visit again soon. Hope you'll stop by and visit with me when you have some time.
All good wishes!
Paula

Dear Connie, I can smell them now! I love the scent of roses. One of my grandmothers (born in 1900) would bathe with rose water and she always smelled wonderful. Your garden is amazing. I admire anyone who can grow a rose. One of my brothers (Troy Howell) lives in Fredericksburg. He is an artist. You may have seen some of his art on 'Fred' the city buses. You live in a beautiful home and area. The photos of your home show all the love and time you have invested. Just lovely. Blessings in the journey, Rebecca #393
ReplyDeleteWell your house is simply lovely! I LOVE your Xmas photo..it's so "Little Women" black and white...just love it...too bad about losing all that ginger bread...I actually had a house that had that as well...I loved it...in the meantime the doors in the foyer...the green one in particular...right up my alley...actually I just recently posted about my redo in the master bath of our house (I'm the "love connection" lisa spoke of, we are in the middle of redoing everything)...only I painted my doors to look like that...I'll have to come back and check out the rest...geez, I got so involved with reading that I have completely forgotten what your gift is...but I'm sure I'd love to win...soooo much fun looking at your work..thx for sharing, june #75
ReplyDeleteCan you feel my jealousy across the ocean? What a beautiful, beautiful place to live. All that land, all that space. And truly YOURS and yet still steeped in history. *sigh*
