Open Garden Day Announcement

This year, the roses have been very shy about showing me when they expect to be in full bloom.  The weather has been up and down temperature-wise, and I like to think that they weren't sure about when it would happen either.  So, I'm making an educated guess, setting a date, and working on preparations ... Drum roll, please ...

The lovely rose in this photo is "Pink Van Fleet"

Mark your calendar and make plans to come by to visit with the roses and to see the fruits of all of my reclamation and renovation efforts in the garden.  You've seen photos of the work here on the blog, and now is your chance to inspect it all in person.  (Address is 335 Hartwood Road, 22406)

I love to meet blog readers, neighbors, fellow rose lovers, and other nice people.  If you're in the area, please make plans to drop by.  Feel free to share the image above, or this whole post if you're so inclined.  (I will even have a few roses for sale ... haven't finished dividing out which ones yet, so stay tuned for that announcement later.)

  1. You do realize, I will phone ahead of time, and be there. What a fun time we will have. You/me. Your garden.

Don't know when, but it will be as described above.

And time especially set aside for some serious dog loving.

    1. Not sad ... I'm glad that we HAVE the Internet so that we can visit with each other at all.

  3. What a beautiful rose! If we lived in the same area, I'd come by for a visit...not sure, but don't think NW Oregon is near where you live. ? Hope you have a fantastic celebration of your gorgeous roses!

I just caught up a little here...the pictures of you are just beautiful! I guess we're all a little bit weird when it comes to having our picture taken. I also believe that we're usually our own worst critic. I love seeing people's faces and can picture them when I read their thoughts. :)

Thank you so much for your comments on my blog. I appreciate them a lot.

    1. Not in NW Oregon ... north central Virginia is a long way from you. However, you may be close to Heirloom Roses, which is just south of Portland.

I usually have fairly light traffic here on Open Garden Day. As much as people say that they want to come visit, few actually do. I'm okay with that.

      I enjoy your blog!

  4. I'd love to come too, but as for others, it's a bit far.

Have fun getting ready and on the big day too, meeting old, and making new, friends.

    1. Since you can’t be here, I will bring you along with the others for a virtual Open Garden afterward.

Preparations this year ARE fun! I see so much improvement after each day that I spend working on the garden … improvement that I expect to pretty much remain that way, too.

  5. Wow, Pink Van Fleet! Is it a sport or a unique genetic cultivar? Better not show that one to visitors or it'll be whittled away to twigs while your back is turned!

    1. We think that this may be the true Bess Lovett, It was rustled by a friend from the USDA Blackspot trial grounds in Beltsville, MD, before they bulldozed the place in the 80s. I keep it as “Pink Van Fleet” because that’s how I received it and that’s how it was listed in the USDA’s sloppy records. My friend thinks that it’s Bess Lovett, and Anne Belovich also thinks it probably is. This summer, I will be propagating it … there’s a spot reserved for it in the Anne Belovich Rambler Garden in Texas, and I need to make sure that there are duplicates available ... just in case of voles, RRD, or some other calamity. Heady stuff, I tell ya!

  6. Connie, I hope we're around then so I can head west from King George to meet you in person and see the beautiful results of all your hard work!

    1. I am always so excited for Open Garden Day! There are parts of the garden this year that will look better than they ever have … other parts that are still totally heinous, but we won’t concentrate on those.
