Bye bye, Ponytail.

One day in April, a stranger asked me if I was growing my hair out so I could donate it.  This got me thinking, and I realized I had to confront the fact that the Rapunzel look probably wasn't working for me anymore.  I don't like to fuss with my hair  (or much of anything else, for that matter), so long hair has been easier for me.  Get up in the morning, run a brush through it, put it up into a ponytail, and call it a day.  No bedhead, no fuss, no muss.

Last week, I had one of those mornings when I looked in the mirror and I almost didn't recognize the person I saw there.  She had frizzy long hair, greying in streaks (which is okay with me, BTW), and I didn't really notice her lovely brown eyes.  THAT was my 'ah ha' moment ... and I made an appointment to take care of the problem.

Donate my hair?  Of course I did!  I had more than enough to spare.

I tried to convince my hairdresser (who has seen me through long and short and everything in between in the many years we have known each other) to razor cut it pixie short, but she protested.  We compromised on a chin-length layer cut with short bangs ... which makes my grey streaks look pretty cool, if I do say so myself.

We didn't take any dramatic 'After' photos at the salon.  Here's one I just snapped just now ... not the best, but you get the idea.

Notice Ruby snoozing in her usual spot.

This new cut is super easy to take care of.  All of that curl and wave is my own, free to be fun and fluffy since it's been released from the weight of an extra foot of length.  All it takes is a tiny bit of gel and a couple of minutes with the hairdryer, and I'm good to go.

I still think I may want to go shorter, but I'll live with this for a month or so to see if I change my mind.

When I got up this morning, I had a technicolor case of bed head ... and I didn't mind at all.

  1. Wow - so cute. I have a permanent pony tail and have wanted to do something dramatic...hubby just told me he liked the long hair...eek! All I know is I need a date with a salon...and I'd love your cut!

  2. If you like it, that's all that really matters. You've got a face that could go in any direction, hair-wise. I like your short cut too!

My issue -- my hubby likes long hair, so I keep it long for his enjoyment. Old-fashioned of course, but it's the least I can do. :)

  3. Looks great. I have the gray streaks, too, and like them a lot.

I've been thinking of your greenhouse lately. Scored some used windows from an old bungalow down the street. So far, they are just taking up room in the garage, but someday, I hope to put them to good use.

  4. It looks great, Connie. I have longer hair because I can control it. When my hair is cut the length of yours it looks like a Brillo pad sitting on top of my head. YOURS looks nothing short of awesome. I LOVE IT! xo Diana

  5. Cute! And one step at a time is probably wise. But you know what, I think you have the fun, sassy personality to pull off the pixie cut if you want to give it a try!

  6. It's a very flattering cut! I'm finding more and more silver strands in my own hair. It's comforting to see people commenting they like their gray.

  7. I hear you about the long hair~I am not one to fuss over mine either & it always seems the short cuts take me long~ last year cut mine & it took me forever in the morning~ So of course grew it back out~ I just blow mine dry & go~
But oh, if mine would look as cute as yours & be easy I would do it~
    love the look~

  8. I tried growing mine long to just wear in a ponytail...didn't work for me. I have a short bob and I love it. EASY and carefree that 's me. Your new do is very cute and if you go shorter it will be cute also...I can tell these things. Glad you could donate your hair! Hugs, Linda

  9. Very flattering! My hair is pulled back to keep it out of my face. I'm not one for fussing, but if mine were thicker and had any body to it, I think I'd try it shorter.♥♫

  11. Connie, I commented long ago on photos of your pixie cut, which I absolutely loved. I had no idea your hair had gotten THAT long. Mine is very long, too, and I'd like to be brave enough to cut it really short, but I'm so lazy and unbrave and the ponytail is so much simpler for me, even though I hate it.

I wanna be brave... I wanna be brave... I wanna be brave!

    You look great!

  12. Nice! Love the cut. I had long hair, short hair, in between hair. My hair is VERY short (Pixie) and I don't have to mess with it much. On days I want to look a little more fluffed up I run the dryer and brush thru it. Otherwise, wash and wear! Give this awhile but if you really want to go short - do it! :-)

You're lovely any way you wear your hair!

  14. TWINS SEPARATED AT BIRTH!!! Connie, you're not gonna believe this..but maybe you will. Yesterday I looked in the mirror and my longer hair was dry and frizzy and I just didn't want to look at it so straggly anymore. It was making me look OLDER. I called my stylist and said.. can you fit me in TODAY! I can't stand it anymore. And do you know... I got the very same cut as YOU. Same. I'll post a pic tomorrow. UNREAL!!!... I am loving it.. I feel LIBERATED...lol..

However mine wasn't long enough to donate. you need 10 inches and mine wasn't as long as yours.

  22. I love it! I got rid of my pony tail about a month ago. It is now super short and it is wash and go! No curling irons, no hair clips...I only wish I had done it sooner!

  23. I really really like it! You have the skin tone that looks good with the natural gray. I am pretty sure I would look washed out and not so great if I did that. Very very nice:-)

  24. I think it looks great. Good for you! I'm the type that changes hair styles often because I get bored with how it looks.

  25. Nice look, Connie. I too go between long hair and short because I like no fuss also. Weird though, I always cut it off in winter and wear the ponytails in summer.

  26. What a super cute cut! I love it! I'm so glad you donated your hair. I've done it in the past and it feels so good. You are very fortunate that your hair looks so adorable short. I wish I could say the same about my own hair.
