Carolina Wrens often nest in the greenhouse. This time, their nest is in a one-gallon pot on the shelf by the door (close to where I put my tools).
Grass, straw, twigs, moss, and a few feathers. Looks comfy and cozy.
It looks like there are at least three eggs in there ... can't tell for sure till I go out with a flashlight to get a better look.
Fortunately, Mrs. Wren isn't too spooked by my comings and goings (which I'm trying to keep to a minimum now). She leaves the nest when I get too close, but returns soon afterward. I'm happy that this spring's nest is in such a convenient spot, so I can easily check on the progress of the eggs and the resulting baby birds.
Goes without saying that I will NOT be replacing that particular missing window pane anytime soon.
Lucky you. That's pretty exciting. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like four eggs today! I love wrens ... they have so much personality.
DeleteI love to watch the little birds hatch! Fun!
ReplyDeleteI love baby birds, too!
DeleteSuper cool!
ReplyDeleteI love this!
:D
xo
I do, too! I saw a Wren in the greenhouse the other day, but couldn't find this latest nesting spot. I especially love them because they don't get confused and lost and stuck in there ... like Robins and Doves have in the past. Been on more than one bird-stuck-in-the-greenhouse rescue mission, I have.
DeleteSo cute, looking forward to the little ones.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! It is hard to keep away from the nest, to let Mr. and Mrs. Wren incubate and raise their babies. I do what I can to limit myself to only check on them every few days.
DeleteHow fun to be able to watch the progress!
ReplyDeleteI will do what I can to share it with everyone, so you can join in on the fun.
DeleteCarolina wrens are such a delight! We have so many on our property. They always get every bug available in our firewood and always surprise us with where they build their nests. One year it was in one of motorcycle helmets that hadn't been used in a while. ;-)
ReplyDeleteShirley
Motorcycle helmet? Not a surprise.
DeleteWe had Wrens nest in our garage at a previous home, using a hole in the garage door as the entrance and exit. When we replaced the door, we had to leave it open a crack during the day till they fledged their babies. At night, when the birds were snuggled in, we closed the door to keep out the other critters. Every morning, I would open the door and let them out for the day.
Awwww, how sweet! I'll be looking forward to seeing the baby pics. :)
ReplyDeleteBaby pics, as well as better photos of the eggs, will be forthcoming!
DeleteHow adorable! I have a nest of phoebes outside my office window. I love them, but they can be noisy. When I worked for Martin Viette Nurseries in New York, we used to get wrens and sparrows nesting in the hanging baskets in the annuals yard :(
ReplyDeleteHi, Jeanne! I love phoebes, too. We have a pair who return every year, to nest on top of the light underneath our front porch. I find that it's easier to know that they're back by listening, because their call is so distinctive. Wrens and Phoebes are very good housekeepers, cleaning up after their babies and keeping a very tidy nest. Sparrows and House Finches, now so much.
DeleteWe had the joy two Springs ago of watching two hummingbird eggs hatch and grow. It was amazing. The nest was just right at eye level. Mama hummer was very tolerant as it was right by our front sidewalk with people coming and going...You would not believe how those two baby thimble sized hummers filled the nest before it was over. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how you did anything other than watch the baby hummers! What an experience!!
DeleteOne of the happiest days of my year is when I hear the wrens "trilling", knowing they have returned. We are about a month away from that day, but I so look forward to it! I have several bird houses in our yard, and the wrens fill them all. I get quite angry at the sparrows, as they are so very aggressive towards the wrens and will sit on the perch of a birdhouse for hours so the wren can't get in. I could hear their song in my mind as you were telling about yours in their nest. Can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteMy bird ID book describes their song as "Tea Kettle, Tea Kettle, Tea Kettle" ... and it IS! Wrens are my favorite bird for every reason imaginable. They don't have colorful feathers, but they make up for it with their colorful personalities. We have them year-round in Virginia.
