Three Quick Snaps Tell a Story

A few minutes ago, as I was sitting here on a bar stool, at the peninsula counter between the kitchen and the dining room, I noticed some movement.  It was Maggie, being silly, biting and kicking a dog toy that Ruby dropped there earlier this morning.  I picked up my iPad, which was sitting on the counter next to me, to photograph and document the silliness.

must . kill . this

Ruby, who was in the other room, must have noticed what Maggie was doing at about the same time as I did.  Almost as soon as I snapped that first photo, nosy Ruby was in here checking to see what was going on.

"Exactly what are you doing with my toy?"

It only took that quick look for Ruby to be satisfied that this was not something where she could participate, and she returned to the family room.  Ruby's interruption broke the spell, and Maggie acted as if nothing had happened ... and she quickly settled in to take a little nap, using the toy as a pillow.

  1. Cute! Whenever Nikita is being cute and I try to take her picture, she ends up looking bored.

    1. It's a cat thing, I think. A garden friend was here taking rose photos two weeks ago, and he got what I think will be some killer shots of Maggie (who was staring him down from her perch on the kitchen peninsula counter at the time). Fortunately, he's cat people to he wasn't freaked out by a cat on the counter as I was preparing to set out our lunch.

    1. Maggie was being a lot more enthusiastic with her toy killing before I got the iPad fired up to take that first photo. Hard to believe that she's supposed to be an old girl, at age 14 now.

  3. Love this story!
That's how life is around here too.
If I stop and watch, I can be entertained easily.
    Yep, it's the simple things!

    1. Such good advice ... all we have to do is be still and appreciate the little bits of silliness that happen. I often wonder what people without pets do for entertainment.

    2. I think they must be incredibly sad and some might not even realize why.
      We are the lucky ones.

  4. Adorable! I thought Ruby was going to be a bit more protective of her toy, but I guess she picks her battles appropriately. ;).

I saw your comment on Cynthia's blog and wanted to stop by and say hello. (I love old cemeteries too)!

    1. Ruby is an extremely good-natured dog, and there are no battles for her at all. She really likes the cats, but Alice is the only one that will play with her. Ruby pretends to bit Alice on the neck (like dogs play) and Alice gently cuffs Ruby across the nose, purring furiously the whole time.

You had me at ‘cemeteries’! Thanks for coming over to see what’s happening over here in Hartwood!

    1. You are very welcome! Lots of funny stuff happens here … I just have to remember to be still and watch it. I am thankful that I had a camera nearby to capture this one.

      Enjoy YOUR weekend!

  6. Animals' antics are far better than tv! Often it is very hard to capture them though. Good job! I love that last photo!

We had a very unique animal experience yesterday. We were camping at our property on the Shenandoah River. I and our collie had just gotten up for the day (hubby was still sleeping in the tent) when a young doe came right into our campsite. She came right up to both me and Sonny face to face! It was obvious that she wanted to be petted. She even tried to play with our collie the way that lambs and baby goats do, picking up her front legs and "boxing" with him. She even touched him when doing that, but lightly, thank goodness. He is a very gentle soul and showed no aggression to her at all. He even hid behind the tent at one point.

I roused hubby so that he could both see this doe and perhaps steer her away. She behaved the same towards him and he went on a long walk with our collie thinking she'd head off, but she was there the whole way and came back with them. Finally, he started our chainsaw and she didn't like the noise and left. We can only think that she was raised by a human as a fawn and doesn't have the usual fear of people. I snapped a few photos of the incident, so we have a record of this odd, once-in-a-lifetime occurrence!
