Something New in the Family Room

I just took this photo with my iPad.  It's the unstaged view that I see right now from where I'm sitting in my chair here in the family room.

Ruby and Winnie ... I can always count on finding them right there.

The sofa is covered with a new quilt that I got on clearance at Ikea on Monday.  The colors aren't exactly right for this room, but it is a linen/cotton blend (so it will wear well), it didn't cost a fortune, it has roses on it, and I like it a lot.  Maggie has clawed the crap out of the arms and corners of this sofa, and the dogs nap on it almost all day ... I find that keeping it covered with something that I can wash is easiest.

This room is starting to remind me of a boho hippie hang out ... with its mix of flowered fabrics and oriental rugs.  Now that I think of it, this probably fits my personality perfectly.

  1. Love it! Sometimes I kinda miss those old hippie days....there was just something so laid back & peaceful about those early years-and you decorated for fun with no thought of what was "stylish"....lol. xo Diana

    1. To me, ‘stylish’ equals ‘mainstream’ and I tend to avoid that kind of stuff. I just do what I like and I hope it comes out okay in the end. Thought that I had pushed it too far with this quilt, but my husband assures me that I haven’t.

As far as stylish stuff goes … if I see one more chevron, I may scream.

  2. I like the quilt! I'm thinking I need to cover my sofa some with Charlie shedding like crazy these days.

    1. Let's not talk about shedding ... Ruby sheds like it's her full time job at times. One of the requirements in my search for a new sofa quilt was one that would camouflage black dog hair. Regular brushing and periodic use of my Furminator help keep most of the fur off the furniture, but there's still some on the sofa to be dealt with. I'm okay with it, and guests and friends understand.

  3. Looks like a very homey scene man. Love the quilt, and Boho hippie style. Stephen Andrew directed me to your blog so that I could learn from your rose grafting post. Hello!!

    1. Homey stuff is what we are all about here! This old place of ours lends itself to formal and traditional, but I tend to be a lot more comfortable than that ... as I sit here with my shoes on the coffee table.

I love Stephen! Glad he directed you over here. Roses were once my business, now it's what I do for fun. Give the rose rooting tutorial a try. I have tried a lot of different ways to propagate roses, and this one has been the most successful for me.

(here's the link to the tutorial, for anyone who sees this and doesn't know what I'm talking about:

    1. Winnie and Ruby are definitely content little critters ... as long as there's not a UPS man or other stranger in the driveway.

    1. The tag says “Ryssby 2014”, if that helps. This quilt is a little bit scratchy, but I’m okay with that for the sofa. Don’t know if I could do it on a bed, tho.

  7. Ruby and Winne look very, very happy! My Panda and Mocha want to hang out with them :)

    1. Ruby would definitely hang out with Panda and Mocha because she really likes other dogs. Winnie likes Ruby and her human family and that’s about all. She growls and barks at other dogs … I often wonder if the other dogs take her seriously.

  8. I like the quilt and the babies on it. I might need to get me one. (a quilt) (hubby doesn't want to get another fur baby, he's afraid it might outlive us and become the responsibility of someone else)

    1. I’m a little bit too young to have been a real hippie. Part of me would have loved to be part of that. Instead, I have just gone my own way, done what I like without much regard to what others think, and concentrated on being true and honest in whatever I do. Honest, in this case, is admitting that I need pattern and color to camouflage the dog hair and inevitable dirt brought in by the dogs and by us humans. The rosy pattern on this quilt is an extra added bonus.

    1. Thanks, Tara! When my girls were growing up, design considerations focused on child-friendly stuff. The girls are all grown now, and I continue to choose things that are comfortable and durable, require minimal maintenance, and make me happy when I see them. This quilt fits the bill.

  12. I love the look. When we let loose our ideas on conformity we usually create something a lot more inviting and comfortable.

    1. Conforming? Me? Okay, maybe a little. Living in this old house, I will admit that it's a challenge to respect the history and still stay with my own comfortable style. Inviting and welcoming ... it's what we're all about!

  13. Still new in our relationship we call it more like his mine and ours a big mixing pot of everything.
Oh my dad would have a fit if he thought I was hippy or hobo or boho. But it fits me.
ha to the dog hair i wear a little bit to work everyday.

    1. I have long held onto the concept that, when we decorates only with things love, the space will be a cohesive reflection of ourselves. This new quilt is coming as close as I have come to fulfilling this idea. Your blend of things will certainly do the same when it works itself out. Dog hair? It’s a way of life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

  14. Don't the dogs look adorable there. It's a fun quilt and I can understand about the arms of the couch. Two of our cats have done the same thing on our couch. Perhaps I should look for a cover-up like that.

    1. This sofa is approaching the end of its useful life. The quilt is a way for me to put my head in the sand (as they say) and try to put off the decision and the expense of a new one. The cat scratching still shows … bad, bad kitty. Covering the seating surfaces gives me a colorful, washable way to keep dog hair and grime under control.

  15. BOHO is a good thing! I like the quilt and know that your pups appreciate it as well. Our dogs love to bury their nose into a blanket when they sleep.

    1. Winnie usually digs and buries her whole little body in that green down throw. Always have to be careful to remind people not to sit on her.
