Perfect Timing

"When should I prune my roses?"  I get asked this question all the time.  The practical advice is to prune roses in early spring when the Forsythia is blooming.

I took these photos while I was at Hollywood Cemetery for a meeting earlier this week.  Our Rose Work Day is tomorrow ... timing turned out to be perfect, considering we chose this day months ago.  Mother Nature could have given us all sorts of problems, but she has behaved herself and has provided optimum conditions for rose pruning.

The cemetery and I are absolutely ready for tomorrow.  Can't wait to meet all of the volunteers and get this done!

(My own Forsythia isn't even showing color yet ... which means that timing for pruning and working in my own garden will also be perfect when I can get to it starting next week.)

  1. We are definitely on the same wavelength Connie! The only forsythia showing any color here has been sitting inside on Mrs. ProfessorRoush's kitchen windowsill for two weeks.

  4. Have a great day! Our weather is predicted to gift us with 16 inches of snow tomorrow. We need the moisture, so it won't be bad, unless the wind howls. And that is predicted, too. I can't wait to get out in the garden.♥♫

  6. I have learned this year - I can't go by dates anymore, I must plant a forsythia in my garden! So glad your timing is going to be perfect - for the cemetery and for your own garden.

  7. Your forsythia are so pretty and full of sunshine and warmth. Nothing that colorful here yet - in fact we're supposed to get 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow - bummer!!! thanks for the tip of pruning roses at the time of the forsythia. Didn't know that. Is it okay if I already did a few?

  8. I only have 2 rose bushes and no Forsythia. Maybe it's different out here in a warmer climate?
