Hey, Connie, How is Petal?

Petal is awesome, thanks for asking.

It's been five months since we adopted her.  In that time, she has settled in beautifully and has blossomed into a wonderful addition to our family.

"Mom, can Ruby and I have a bite of that?"

sniff, sniff, sniff

"What's that cat doing back there?"

Petal loves toys.  We keep them in a large basket in the family room.  She regularly empties the basket and gathers her favorites.

Donut Cow and Green Frog.

Squeeky Jack, two bones, and an antler.

Miffy Bunny, her current favorite.

As she got comfortable with our routine, she found ways to help around the house.

Cleaning the recyclables.

Quality control inspector, while I attach the hangers to a mirror.

Dog chewy taste tester.

In true greyhound style, she spends a huge majority of her time either lounging on her bed or sound asleep.

Almost as a way of celebrating the anniversary of Petal's Gotcha Day on the 12th, a string of coincidences on Facebook led to finding and making contact with the family in Pennsylvania who adopted her mom, Marigold.  I  look forward to getting to know Marigold and her family and am excited to share Petal with them.

Marigold's adoption photo.

It is wonderful to have Petal in our family.  Having ANY greyhound is a good thing (because I love the breed THAT much).  This particular greyhound is a perfect match for our lifestyle, habits, and mix of critters.  She accepts the cats as members of the pack, and she and Ruby get along almost perfectly.

Petal is exactly what we asked from her adoption group:  gentle, friendly, and doesn't eat cats.  She is also eager to please, curious, quiet, funny, patient, affectionate, a little bit pushy ... and perfect ... except for the 'chews on shoes' thing that developed recently.  That's okay, it helps remind us to put our shoes away where they belong.

Five months with Petal feels like she's been here forever.  In this short time, I can't imagine our family without her in it.

I often share Petal photos and videos on Instagram.  I can do it in-the-moment from my phone, and I really have come to love that.  If you want to see more of her, and the other critters, house projects, garden stuff, etc., click over there and follow hartwoodroses.

  1. She's so beautiful! I'm totally envious. I'd almost forgotten about that awkward twisted s-shape laying down pose.💜

    1. It's amazing how many different uncomfortable-looking positions these critters can assume. I am most impressed with how small they can become when they wind up into a ball to sleep ... on the flip side, they can stretch out to the point where no bed is big enough for them.

I'm sitting here wondering how it is possible to dress a greyhound warmly enough in your winter weather to deal with even a short turn-out.

  3. Beautiful dog. Is she a retired racing dog? I am seriously considering fostering or maybe adopting one. Would you mind telling me how high is your fence? Thank you!

    1. Petal IS a retired racing dog. I was introduced to the breed by a neighbor's friend in '99. It was love at first sight.

In general, greyhounds aren't jumpers and will respect a good fence. Our fence at this house, and at our last two houses, is a 4' high picket fence. It's a good height for keeping kids and dogs contained.

If you don't mind my asking, where are you? I have connections with a lot of different adoption groups, and I will be happy to direct you to one that can help you adopt a 'hound. With Petal, we signed a foster agreement with the intent to adopt her if we saw that she fit in well. With our previous two greyhounds, we adopted them on the spot. I believe in listening to that little wise voice inside of each of us, the one that knows without fail whether something is the right decision or not.

    1. Thank you, Sandra! That photo was a mirror selfie to capture an image that I saw while passing through a booth at Lucketts. It's one of my favorites.

  5. Petal is really beautiful, and there's just something about her pictures that always make me smile. She just looks so contentedly happy and at peace. She is truly where she is supposed to be.

    1. Petal is the happiest dog EVER! She's busy, but not in a bad way, and she fits here perfectly. I'm not one to go on about the meant-to-be stuff, but I think this match comes really close.

    1. Petal does fit here almost perfectly. I think the key to it is knowing what we wanted and having the adoption rep truly listen to us. It helps that we have known her for a while, though we haven't adopted from her group till now.

I miss Winnie, too. Every day. That little dog taught me a lot, and she gave so much to us and to folks like you who followed along. I never imagined that I could fall so completely in love with a miniature dog ... now I can't imagine life without having known her.

  7. Petal is so lucky to have found such a warm and caring home. I love how she is so attached to her toys. I adopted a 2 year old German Sheppard almost two years ago. My first time adopting. I love how quickly he became family.
