Ruby and Roses

Every year, there is always a place in the garden that becomes the perfect photo spot.  It's not something I plan or stage ... it just happens.  This year, 'Pink Pillar' and 'Parade' fell forward and mingled their blossoms to create a great background for a garden photo session with Ruby.

Ruby is really unsure so far about being an only dog.  She came into our family last year and had Daniel here to show her the way and give her clues about strangers and new situations.  Now that Daniel is gone, it's my job to teach her that she can rely on me to lead her and keep both of us safe.   (Her half-herding-dog genetics will still probably cause her to be a bit wary at first, but I hope to overcome this as much as I can ... and bring out more of the Labrador in her.)

Yesterday's open garden was to have been a good way for her to get used to lots of different people, as visitors came and went and wandered around in HER yard.  There was one flaw in my plan ... very few people showed up.  Don't know why  ... doesn't really matter why, to tell the truth ... it was just a fact.

Ruby greeted the first guests just as I knew she would, by barking.  She very quickly warmed up, though, and was following along and schmoozing as I showed them around the garden.  That was enough for her for one day, so I ended her training session on this positive note and she spent the rest of the day inside napping on the sofa.

At first, I was very disappointed to have so few visitors.  Looking on the bright side now, the folks who did come had a perfect day.  The roses are the best they have ever been, the weather was cool and sunny and breezy, I had the opportunity to chat with everyone, and Mr. and Mrs. Mockingbird behaved themselves.

The garden will be open again next Sunday, June 2.  If more people come, that will be great.  If not, that's okay, too.

  1. I'm always disappointed that visitors (and unfortunate bystanders) aren't as rose-crazy as I am either :)

But, being serious, it is disappointing that more don't take the opportunity to learn about roses and their place in history.

  4. I suppose people have so many choices as to how to spend the holiday weekend. I'm glad Ruby did so well. Is she going to have a new brother or sister anytime soon?

  5. What lovely pictures of Ruby. It's fun to discover a perfect spot for photos.

I would love to visit! Our first flush of roses, here in DFW, have come and gone. I'd love to see more.

I have a Crinum, Althea and a Salvia blooming this morning (and other things). But I did love the roses when they were blooming!

  6. Beautiful backdrop for a beautiful Ruby!

Cool, sunny and breezy sounds great. It was downright hot here. I don't handle hot very well.

    Happy Memorial Day, Connie.

  9. I'm so glad you featured 'Parade' photos in this post. I received on as a birthday present years ago in a little bucket (the kind you buy at Trader Joe's market). I've never known how big the bush is supposed to get until seeing your photos. I'm thrilled that I planted mine along our fence where I did and look forward to watching it grow and fill out even more than it already has over the past few years. I always wondered if I made a mistake by planting it in the ground and not keeping it in a container. Now I don't need to wonder anymore.

  10. Exactly, it's the roses & garden in charge of what will be stunning. And when.

Of course adding a dog always helps.

  11. Ruby looks very much like my grandchildrens' dog, Bella who they adopted last year. Black dogs, for some reason are good dogs. Just an observation I've made over the years. Your roses are so nice!

  13. Yes, you never know how many people will show up. Some times too many, but that is always better than only a few, when you are waiting for your guests. But it's unpredictable, I had my garden open for many years and it was always different. But for your dog this is a good warming up, I think. He looks beautiful in front of the roses.

  14. Oh, I would have loved to be there, but I just couldn't make it. Same for next weekend. I've finally added some more roses to the rose garden and am very excited to learn more. I'm actually taking a class from a friend of yours next weekend which is why I won't be able to come see your garden!
