Sunday Snapshot: What's on Your Sofa?

Like many other pet owners whose dogs/cats are allowed on the furniture, I keep a washable cover on our family room sofa.  Yesterday, while on a quick trip to pick up a couple of things at Walmart, I stumbled across this new one as I was cutting through the bedding department.

A full/queen sized quilt, pattern called 'Aztec Stripes,' for only $20!

The colors of this new quilt are perfect for this room, and I think it's a good choice for some autumn/winter style ... and it still plays along with the Boho Traditional vibe that we have in here.  (As a reminder, our other sofa cover quilt looks like this:)

This red sofa is ancient.  The guts of it are still in good shape, but the fabric is beginning to go ... both from age and deterioration and from animal abuse, namely in the form of Maggie and her claws.  The cover camouflages the sitting area, and provides a washable solution to fur and whatever else gets onto the furniture.

Here's a question for you ... Do you, or have you, allowed your critters onto the furniture and, if so, do you have covers?

  1. First, love your new sofa cover!
I have a Mid-Century Naugahyde sofa that I was completely in love with.
If it's possible to love an inanimate object.
I've posted many photos of my Blue lounging on it.
    Then this happened - http://oldblackcatboo.blogspot.com/2015/09/booth-update-and-bad-dog-jimmy.html
    Sigh.
So... I have repaired it with BLACK DUCT TAPE!!!!
AARRRGGGH! not quite the look I was going for but....
so, that's what we will live with for now.
Some day I will get a new sofa and I will still let the animals on it.
I mean, how could I not? LOL!
(I covered it with an olive green quilt that looked very nice right after that happened until Jimmy balled it up and laid on it and then it fell to the floor and old dog Squeak walked over and "sprinkled" it. So never mind with the quilt!)

    1. I remember when you showed us that Jimmy had “Choo’ed” on your sofa!

We will also get a new sofa one day, after Maggie is gone and can no longer shred things. It will still be a while because (a) I have no idea what I want, (b) good furniture is really expensive, and I’m hesitant to spend that kind of money when I still have a serviceable sofa, and (c) Maggie is probably going to live forever.

  2. My husband had a no animals on the couch policy. When we transitioned from Greyhounds to little dogs, I kicked that rule to the curb. "What's this?" he asked. "They're not on the couch." I explained, " they're on a blanket [that just happens to be on the couch]."

    1. Greyhounds? Did I know that you were also former greyhound people?

We had a no dogs on the furniture rule before we got Ruby. On her second or third day with us, she jumped up onto the sofa and settled in. I looked at my husband, he looked at me, we both shrugged, and we have had dogs on the sofa ever since. We probably always will.

    2. No I never mentioned our greyhounds. Birds of a feather flock together, don't they?

  3. Nice new cover for your sofa Conny! Nowadays I've only one dog and you will understand he is allowed on all chairs and sofa. When we had a dog and five cats they also were allowed everywhere. I always tell my friends we live in a stable, Snarf walks in and out, muddy or not. The sofa and the chairs are always covered with, sometimes a nice cover from the shop, but also with old blankets and old curtains. When I have cleaned the floors I sometimes even put old sheets on them. Once a friend came in and she asked if I was going to paint the drawing room and kitchen.........their were sheets on the floor.

    1. We have this cover on the sofa, and smaller ones for the cats on other furniture in the living room. It helps keep the inevitable mat of shed fur in one spot as much as possible. We also vacuum a LOT!

  4. I saved the blog that you did in July with the second photo that is here. I was looking back on my saved photos and wanted to email you that I just love this photograph. They are so adorable together and, lo and behold, they were on today's blog!! Talk about coincidence. What is on my sofa is our cat, Melvin and I do not mind a bit because I put a small blanket on there and he sits on that....he is a smart one, lol.

    1. We are a picture postcard peaceable kingdom here most mornings. Ruby camps out on the far end of the sofa, Winnie on her green blanket on the near corner. I swear that the sight of them like this lowers my blood pressure.

Cats? They rule the place and I have given up on trying to keep them off of stuff ... except the kitchen counters. I'm still winning that battle, thank goodness. (most of the time)

  5. I had two rough collies and then decided to get a Chihuahua with less coat. Now we have two Chihuahuas and I swear, more hairs on our blue sofa than we had with the collies! So now our sofa has a blanket on it that is the same colour as the dog's hair!

    1. Ruby sheds like it's her full-time job. Little black hairs EVERYWHERE! No amount of brushing and furminating appears to make the slightest difference. I'm okay with it. It's black and it blends in. Winnie, OTOH, has an incredibly thick coat for such a little pipsqueak, but I never notice any shed hair on anything. I have used the furminator on her a couple of times, and I get a ridiculously small pinch of fur.

    1. Having two covers now means that I can rotate them and always have a clean one to use when I want.

  7. I do allow Charlie on the furniture (hard to stop a cat I think, lol) and I keep a quilt on the bottom cushions for easier cleaning. Still there is cat hair everywhere in my home.

    1. Cats live by their own rules. For them, I have crib quilts on the living room sofa, small pads on the windowsills, and a fleece blanket in the recliner. Anything to lure them to the spot where I want them. It helps keep the fur contained to a limited number of areas.

Speaking of fur ... my next post will have a great way to deal with it.

  8. Yep- we have not had dogs for a lot of years but we always allowed our kitties on our furniture-except for the table! lol I did have washable slipcovers that I made. I sure miss having pets---but we have so many allergies with family members that it is just awful for them. Kids win! lol xo Diana ps...LOVE that new striped cover!

    1. I have been allergic to cats and dogs since I was a child. Fortunately, it's less of a problem for me now that I'm old. Antihistamines are here for whenever I need some help.

My husband is also allergic. That sweet man endured years of allergy shots so that we can continue to share our lives with animals! (not sure what I would have done if my kids had been allergic ... that's a whole different thing.)

  9. I love your new cover and it goes very well with your Bohemian look going on.

Yes, pets on furniture, although not on tables, etc. Some have covers and some do not. I have one indoor kitty with me and she does enjoy fresh covers on her spaces. :-)

    1. We have friends who say that their dogs are allowed everywhere in the house except on the dining table and the kitchen counters. Cats tend to thumb their noses at rules like this ... mine lounge on the dining table (we rarely use it), but I do keep them off of the counters in the kitchen. I can tell from the footprints that they get up there when I'm not looking.

  10. Our Borzoi “technically” wasn't allowed on the furniture, although there was always evidence he was probably up on the antique couch the minute we walked out the door and left him alone. But the upholstery was a very thick linen and it never seemed to suffer from his claws in the slightest. He preferred laying by the door though - it was a drafty old house and he liked the cool breeze that came in underneath where it never closed quite right. LOL

    1. Our greyhounds had their choice of numerous comfy beds, and neither of them ever showed the slightest inclination toward getting on the furniture. Ruby, now, is a different story. She was a sofa dog, and I had to adapt and become a dog-on-the-sofa human ... and I admit that I am happy about it.

  11. Yes, and we've been through so many covers I have lost count, lol. Currently we only have Doyle and he hardly ever jumps up on the sofa, which is leather and not covered. As long as we keep his nails trimmed I'm not expecting problems.

I love the look of your new cover, which is perfect for your room. I see the fur babies agree! :)

    1. No covers on our leather chairs, and, like you, I don't worry about them. That's the awesome thing about leather ... it looks better as it gets older and broken in.

  12. We have people furniture and dog beds..... currently we have 9 dog beds in the house. And the Greys use the dog beds AND any "people furniture" they care to use. They live here, too! We do keep throws on everything, including on the people beds. They love to "floof" those throws, though, and a lot of them just end up being nests for them. Can't imagine trying to keep them off of the furniture. We also have a cat (we call her the Littlest Greyhound") because she is 16 and has lived with 5 Greys over those years and sleeps with them, eats with them, and will only drink out of their water dishes. She, too, has the run of the furniture and her own little bed between the 2 Grey's beds in the living room. We don't let her on the tables, although I KNOW she is up there when we aren't around. We couldn't be happier with the arrangement. And, they do let us join them on the couches and our bed!! :-)

    1. Even though we still have some of the best dog beds from our time as greyhound owners, I imagine that all dogs we have from now on will be sofa dogs.
