Chihuahua Update ... and a Name.

After trying names on this little dog for two whole days, I am fairly certain that we have settled on Winnie ... Winnie Pearl.  She just looks like a Winnie and it seems to fit her perfectly.  (Thank you for all of your suggestions of names for her in response to my last post.)

She is getting more comfortable in her new surroundings, and she has started to follow me around for short distances instead of sitting in one spot and looking confused and adorable.  She loves to sit in laps, and she will waddle over and hop right in if I sit on the floor near her.

We were doing this yesterday morning in the dining room, and Dorothy came by.  She walked past us and into the kitchen, checked things out in there for a minute or two, and she walked back out ... keeping an eye on Winnie the whole time.  Dorothy's behavior and acceptance of Winnie will be what finally determines whether we can keep her or not.  As of now, I am very pleased with how well it's going.

While Winnie and I were sitting on the floor, I took this photo so I could show just how small this dog is ... her paw is the same size as my thumb.

Winnie has learned that her home base is her pink fleece bed, and she hops into it all by herself and settles right in.  She and Ruby spent most of yesterday snoozing on the sofa.

Dorothy would come by occasionally to keep an eye on the situation.  Notice that she looks concerned, but it's no longer a look of panic.  It's a huge step for her.

Last night, as I sat on the sofa, watching 'American Idol' and 'Rehab Addict', things took another step toward returning to normal.  Alice walked into the room, hopped up and settled into her usual spot between my left leg and the arm of the sofa, and went to sleep.  (YAY!!!!)  Then it got even better ... when I got up to go to the basement to switch my load of laundry, Alice stayed where she was.  There they were, two dogs and a very brave cat, all sharing the sofa at the same time.

Winnie is settling in very quickly and finding her place in our daily routine.  I never in a million years thought that I would EVER have a dog like this.  It goes to show that the little voice in my gut knows more than I do.  I was recently asked by a friend if I was going to get another dog, and I told her that I wasn't actively looking for one ... but that I would know when the right time and the right dog came along.  Unless circumstances change pretty drastically, that time is now and Ms. Winnie is in her forever home.

  4. Winnie is the perfect name! She looks more concerned about Alice than Alice seems about her. And it sounds like Dorothy is coming around - yay! Did Maggie just accept her right away?

  6. For your husband's response, alone, I love him.

Winnie teaches us humans much. Elderly with myriad health issues, and lifestyle upheavals she still loves & delights. Not afraid to trust again.

Few people could come thru as Winnie has .

  7. You need to know that if, for any reason, this does not work out I will drive down and take Winnie. I mean it.
I know that it can be so horribly stressful when your babies don't get along for whatever reason. You feel like you are backed into a corner without options. I have your back. You have my word.
HOWEVER, it looks as if everything is proceeding successfully. Dorothy seems to realize her weight advantage!
I need to go back and read your old posts. Life has kept me from Blogland as of late.
I am so blessed to know you, my friend. You make me want to be a better person.

  8. So glad to hear that Winnie and the rest of the clan are adapting to each other! Dorothy's eyes are quite large and round in that photo. She sure looks like she's cautiously taking in the view. I have no doubts they will all be comfortable in no time, although Chihuahuas can be pretty dang feisty at any age and love to try to rule the roost.

  10. Maybe Dorothy will realize that Ms. Winnie Pearl does not have ANY teeth and is not a threat in any way.

It's interesting to see how things are progressing! Maybe Dorothy is trying to figure out why the doggies shrunk? Best of luck!

  11. What a perfect name for that little gal. I have a good feeling about her staying right there on her pink bed for as long as she has. It doesn't take much to give a dog the comfort it needs and deserves :-)

  13. it's beyond me how anyone can abandon a pet ....makes me cry and I am thrilled you have taken Winnie Pearl in. That's the cutest name ever and I know she is going to bring you years of joy. The cats knew she was a sweetheart....

  14. Aw, what a sweetheart! I love hearing stories like this! Her story reminds me of my LizzieBelle. When I saw her running scared around our church property for several days with her bare back and bottom I just knew when I saw her face that she needed me and I needed her. I never dreamed I would fall in love with the Chihuahua breed but I have. I will never understand how people can abandon their pets. Makes me very sad.

I'm glad Everyone is adjusting and I know Winnie Pearl will thoroughly enjoy all the love she will get in her new home!

  15. Oh Connie! What a complete and utter blessing you are to sweet little Winnie. You are just awesome! How could anyone not love that sweet little girl? Her extreme overbite made me giggle, and Dorothy's "drama queen" reaction was hilarious! Oh I can hardly wait to hear the ongoing story of how everyone settles with this darling little lady. :)

Love you for your loving heart, girl!! ♥
