Key West, Day 1

Thank you for all of the wonderful wishes for our vacation in Key West!  We arrived here on Friday evening.  The day began at an ungodly early hour, so we could hit the road and get to the airport for our 5:50am flight out of Richmond.

I really don't like to fly ... but I do like the scenery I see out the window of the plane.  This was sunrise on Friday.  (It looks like the cover of a Pink Floyd album, doesn't it?)

You folks in Atlanta still have some lovely fall color, as seen from the air.

We landed in Fort Lauderdale at 10-something, picked up our rental car, and headed down Route 1 south, bound for Key West.  As we passed through Homestead, we made a stop at Robert Is Here ... the best and coolest farm stand I have ever seen.

We saw every sort of tropical fruit in existence, I do believe.  Most were available for tasting, which I gladly did.

Dragonfruit

Apple Bananas ... yum!

In the back, Robert has an area with donkeys and goats and geese ... and EMUS!

and parrots.

What did we buy?  Some Apple Bananas, of course, and dragonfruit and some lychees.  We also came away with one of the best things I have tasted to date ... Key Lime Milkshakes!

By the time we reached Islamorada, we were hungry for lunch ... just in time to hit Craig's Restaurant for one of their Super Fish Sandwiches.  (I fully intend to overdose on fish while we are in the Keys.)

After lunch, we hopped back in the car, pointed it south, and kept driving ... and driving ... and driving.  If you have a fear of bridges, this may not be the most comfortable part of the the trip for you.  Fortunately, I don't mind bridges ... and the scenery is gorgeous.

We arrived in Key West just as the sun was setting ... and it was raining, as it had rained on us off and on throughout our whole drive down here.  It was a short shower, fortunately, and we unpacked the car and settled into our rented townhouse pretty quickly.

Our townhouse has a beautiful courtyard!

On Saturday, we headed out to spend the day seeing what Key West has to offer.  I took over 200 photos!  It's going to take me a while to sift through those ... I'll get to it so you can see how much fun we're having in my next installment.
