This Week's Snippets

This has been a very quiet week.  The Husband left for a business trip on Monday, returning late on Thursday night, which meant that I had the house all to myself for most of four whole days!

I spent the mornings at the sewing machine, trying to design a better mousetrap ... i.e., a custom designed doggie-carrying sling bag.  This is Version #4, which I finished this morning, and it is almost perfect.

The design is based on a bag that I bought at a local dog boutique a few weeks ago.  That bag was okay, but it needed to be a bit deeper to hold Winnie in more securely, with a better system to adjust the strap, and pockets for change purse, cell phone, etc.  As you can see from the photo above, taken in the mirror on the wall beside our front door, this bag meets with Winnie's approval.  She's completely relaxed and happy in there, and I can't wait to get out and give it a real 'road test'.

I brought my sewing machine downstairs and have been sewing at the dining table, instead of upstairs in my sewing room.  The windows in the dining room face west and south and the light in here is really good.  The sunshine today was very much appreciated as I worked, because the outside temperature has been below freezing all day.  Dorothy was soaking it in, too.

That shoebox has been on the windowsill for at least two years.  Dorothy claimed it when I unloaded the shoes that came in it.  She is in there at least part of most every day, and I don't have the heart to get rid of it.  At least it's plain brown and sort of blends in and isn't TOO obvious.

*************************
We had the weirdest snow storms on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Each morning, it was snowing when I woke up ... and the snow continued till around noon, amounting to a little over an inch each day.  Then the sun came out and all of the snow was melted and gone by dinnertime.  Both days.

This photo was taken on Tuesday, and the view was exactly the same on Wednesday.

We had what could have been a very scary thing happen when I was in the backyard with the dogs after they had their dinner on Thursday evening.  Ruby was off sniffing stuff, probably trying to find rabbit poop for dessert, and I was following Winnie as she trotted just ahead of me looking for the perfect spot for her 'business'.  Out of nowhere, a Bald Eagle did a low fly-by over the yard, probably checking out the situation and deciding whether to attempt to have Chihuahua for dinner.  Winnie must not have been easy enough pickings with me right there, and the eagle continued on its way.  I have never and would never leave Winnie outside by herself, and this was a reminder of a big reason why this is important.

I caught this photo of Winnie earlier today, all folded up in a fleece blanket on her dog bed.

Winnie has been here for five weeks now ... such a short time according to the calendar, but I can't imagine the place without her now.  Hard to comprehend how I have fallen head-over-heels for this little dog.  Me?  I'm a big dog person ... or so I thought.  Winnie is a big dog in a tiny body, so it's all good.  No matter what her size, she is perfect for us.

  1. Oh my goodness, so much cuteness since Winnie came home with you. She does look pretty happy in her bag. Scary about the eagle, yikes!

  2. Winnie is AAAdorable and love the bag. Around here it's eagles, owls and hawks that keep me searching the skies.

  3. I would patent that sling bag and call it the "Pupoose."

Really scary with the eagle. I've seen hawks drop down out of nowhere and scoop up birds at my mom's house. It's nature but it's still upsetting. I can't imagine that happening to a pet.

  6. Winnie would make a bite-size snack for most any raptor! I wouldn't take any chances either. I just saw my first ever eagle (in person) fly over the freeway on the way to the hospital and didn't have my camera!

  7. Winnie is so adorable and could steal anyone's heart just by looking at her.

I love her in her new carryall bag, but my heart was really captured with the last photo. She knows she has a wonderful, loving place to spend her days and she's oh so content. Thank you for taking her into your home and showering her with love.

  8. We have 2 Greyhounds and I have followed your blog for a couple of years. We also have 2 cats, and the box on your windowsill made me laugh. About 4 years ago I ordered shoes from QVC. When I opened the box they sent them in,(not the actual shoe box) our one cat climbed in and has slept in it every day since. At least once a day BOTH of them crowd in together for a nap. That silly QVC box remains on our dining room floor. Then at Christmas this year, my daughter bought each of the cats a new soft and cuddly bed. She brought them in the house in the Kohl's bag. We took one bed out to look at, and the one cat crawled into the Kohl's bag with the cat bed in it and took a nap. Now we have a cat ~ in a bed ~ in a bag and she naps in there all the time. So we have a QVC box and a Kohl's bag which makes it look like we just throw garbage in the house, but they use them all day long, how do we move them?? The Greys just sleep on the couches all day observing the silliness of the cats! Never a dull moment! BTW, Winnie is adorable. We are big dog people, too, but your journey with her has been amazing to watch. She is definitely part of your family and looks so very happy!!

  9. Great idea this sling bag for Winnie, so you take her easily with you and it protects her against raptors. And the weather, brrr a snowstorm, you are still in winter, beautiful picture of Ruby looking through the window. I suppose he loves going outside weather or no weather. All your animals look so adorable on the photos.

  10. Your doggie bag is adorable for one reason--Winnie! Also, I love the fact that you have a special sleeping arrangement for the kitty! Both look safe and snugly to me. Sadly, one of my neighbors did have an eagle fly off with their small dog. so you are wise to be out with Winnie.♥♫

  12. Very clever! Winnie looks very comfortable in her port-a-pooch pouch.

We have hawks in our yard. Our dogs are not as small as Winnie, but I'm always with them outside.

  13. Love the photo of Winnie in the sling purse! We had a similar thing happen one time when Pepper was sunning himself on the driveway and a Hawk did a fly by. Scared me to death! Luckily I was right there. I never leave him out alone outside for the same reason.

  14. Winnie is so cute. I love your little carrying bag. Oh that would have been horrible if that Eagle would have swooped in on Winnie. I'm so glad you were with her.

  15. Winnie is adorable and I love the doggie bag! We had a cat disappear and I think it was an Eagle. Charlie is an indoor only guy for sure. hugs, Linda

  16. Hi Connie! That little doggie bag is just perfect for sweet Winnie! What a genius idea! I can't believe it's been 5 weeks already since she's come to live with you. Wow. She looks so very happy and healthy! :) Glad to see that spring is inching her way to you. The sun is a bit warmer here, but we still have 24" of snow on the ground. Got a long way to go before any gardening! lol
