Open Garden Day Announcement, 2016

Mark your calendar and make plans to come by to visit with the roses during this year's Open Garden Day, Monday, March 30, 2016 (Memorial Day).  Feel free to share this image, or this entire post, to spread the word.

I call this beauty "Mine Road Noisette".  The story of how I collected cuttings of this rose is HERE.

All are welcome ... friends, neighbors, blog readers, rose lovers, and anyone else who wants to come meet the roses in person.  Your dogs may come, too, but they must be on a leash at all times ... no flexi-leads are allowed.  (Address is:  335 Hartwood Road, 22406)

Those of you who are familiar with the garden may be surprised by some of the changes.  The Rambler Fence is nearly bare because I am replanting and reclaiming the roses.  The Miniature Garden is filling in VERY nicely and I am pleased with how it's progressing.  The Front Border and Hybrid Tea Gardens are finally beginning to look like the image that I have of them in my imagination.  The Rose Field is still a heinous mess, but progress on its rebirth is being made in limited areas.

Open Garden Day is always one of my favorite days of the year!  My next favorite is the day after, when all the people are gone and I can quietly reflect and appreciate what I have created.

  1. Oh- I would SOOO love to live close enough to attend! Nothing like seeing it in person-pictures just won't do your garden justice, I bet. xo Diana

    1. Close-ups and carefully cropped photos tell part of the story. Even with the parts of the garden that are neglected and overgrown, the rest of the roses steal the show and it’s pretty overwhelming to see them in full bloom in person.

  2. The whole Rambler Fence garden got really overgrown and choked with weeds. Two historically cold winters in a row killed or fatally damaged most of the Tea roses there. The ramblers looked like haystacks. I thinned the ramblers to a within a shadow of their former selves, eliminated a duplicate rambler, dug out the dead and dying Teas, expanded the bed by eliminating a turn that followed the fence and taking it in a straight line. The new area has Chinas, Teas, and some smaller roses that have been living in pots for WAY too long. Soon, I will be digging out two or three of the more common Barbier Ramblers (and placing them up for adoption), replacing them with rarer Ramblers that will be coming soon. Empty spaces that remain will be filled with Hollywood Cemetery roses, Tufton roses, and whatever I have left that needs space in the ground.
