Sunday Snapshot ... What a Bird Brain!

I went outside early this morning to work in the garden.  As I walked past the greenhouse, I heard some commotion inside.  A Mourning Dove was stuck in there, flapping against the glass, stuck behind a cabinet on one of the benches, trying to get out.

He/She was easy to catch, and he/she didn't struggle when I pinned him/her into place and scooped him/her up ... didn't even flinch when I took my phone out of my pocket to capture a couple of images to record the rescue.  Then I opened my hand and he/she flew away.

He/She probably would have eventually figured out how to get out of the greenhouse on his/her own.  I wasn't taking a chance, choosing the direct rescue route to make sure that he/she would be okay.

(By the way, the gardens are beginning to look totally fabulous, and I can't wait to share them with you in a few weeks.)

  1. Mourning doves are total bird brains. LOL My husband mentions how dumb they are every time one sits on our roof or drinks from our bird bath. I will say that the one you assisted was quite pretty!

    1. Definitely not the brightest of birds. I'm glad, because that made it easier to catch.

  2. Good for you, Connie. Glad to hear the dove was easy to catch. Let's hope he/she learned not to do that again! Although I doubt it! ♥

    1. Thanks! I also doubt that the dove learned anything from the experience.

  3. My, what big eyes it has....sigh, imagine what a beauty a passenger pigeon would have been.

    1. Big eyes, and a lot more colorful than I have noticed from farther away. The blue eye-liner and bright pink feet were quite striking.

    1. I was so glad to get an up-close look at this bird. It wasn't the dull grey bird that I expected to see, and it had such a gentle way about it.

    1. Successful and easy! The best part was that I got to get a good look at him/her before the release. Had a Robin stuck in the greenhouse a few years ago ... that rescue required a lot more chasing and dexterity, as the stupid bird was flying from window to window trying to evade capture.

    1. I sit and watch birds here a lot, and I have never seen Doves have any kind of aggressive behavior at all. They're usually sitting in pairs, on a wire, tree branch, rooftop, or on the ground. That gentle nature made for a very easy rescue ... I reached over the bench and grabbed it, with my left hand, and that was all it took. No struggling or squawking. It flew away, unharmed, when I opened my hand.

    1. I was pretty pleased with how that quick iPhone snap came out ... almost as if the Dove posed for his/her portrait.

  8. You probably saved him/her a great deal of effort and thrashing around and possible injury!

    1. I think you’re right. The bird was positive that the way out of its predicament was to continue to flap at the window.
