North to Alaska.

Greetings from Vancouver! We flew here yesterday, on the first leg of our trip to Alaska. It was a long day. We left home at 3:30am, flew from Virginia to Seattle, loaded up into a rental car, and drove to Vancouver. The scenery on the plane ride and the drive was beautiful.

Final preparations for this trip were WAY more work than i anticipated. First, there are the pets that need cared for. Ruby is staying with my parents, and Daniel and the cats are home with a whole team of caretakers.

It took me all week to pack. I was laying out outfits and other assorted bits, editing and rearranging things so I had enough for two weeks away ... but not too much. Having to pack ship clothes, land clothes, warm clothes, dressy clothes .... for this girl that lives in jeans and flip flops .... it was an ordeal.

The cats, especially Maggie, knew that something was afoot. They are not going to be happy with us away for so long. (our daughter is there, but that's still not the same as having us home). To be honest, I will miss them, too.

Daniel is feeling pretty well right now, so I am only a little bit worried about leaving him in the care of family and friends while we are gone. There are lab tests outstanding for him, and the vet has promised to get a message to me when the results come in.

I am going to work really hard to relax and enjoy myself during this trip. Alaska is someplace that I have always wanted to see, and we will see a LOT of it during the two weeks that we are there.

More to come as Internet access allows. (all photos in this post were taken on Thursday, while I was trying to pack my suitcases. Maggie had planted herself on my clothes piled on my bed, and Daniel was chilling on the floor.)

  1. Our pets know when we are leaving and don't make it easy do they? Sounds like the first leg of the trip went well. I am so excited for you and can't wait to enjoy Alaska along with you! Hugs, Linda

  3. Hahaha, they know something's going on. I used to have a dog that insisted on getting in the suitcases and tote bags.

I'm anxious to see photos of your trip. Enjoy yourself!

  4. Cute photos. Love how kitties decide to plop down on what you're about to pack. White cat hair on the clean clothes -- always happens! Have a good time! Hope you enjoyed Vancouver.

  6. Cute pics of the upside-down Maggie and of Daniel. I have been trying to convince my husband to take a trip to Alaska. Perhaps if I tell him all you see, he'll get excited and say yes! :) Can't wait to hear all about your travels!

  7. Sending up prayers for safe travels for you both, Connie. :) Have a great time and try not to worry about your furbabies too much. Although I know how difficult that is... :)

  8. I hope you have a great time. I have always wanted to see Alaska as well. Our dogs get very nervous when they see suitcases, wondering if they get to go too. Once they see their bed and the food canister, anxiousness turns to glee.

  9. I hope you enjoy every moment of your trip. Try to relax and just BE there. Our Mistycat used to climb into my suitcase and lay there while I was packing. Once it was closed she would lay on it...always knew something was up- xo Diana

  12. Our cats are always wise to us when we're packing. Dexter even goes so far as to jump on top of the suitcase as it's being wheeled to the door as if to say, "Don't forget me!" Your little furry babies will miss you, but are in good hands as you enjoy yourself exploring Alaska!

  13. Alaska! My dream trip...We were supposed to go last summer ( a year ago this week!) and fly/drive the route as you! Must be the same cruise. I was so disappointed we had to cancel but precarious health makes being too far from home a scary thing. Maybe next year for us!
Meanwhile, I will drool over every picture you post and every sentence you write! Please think of me when watching all those glorious wild creatures!
I know your fur-babies are in good hands. But it is always hard to leave mine too! I so understand...
    Have fun and be safe.
