Sunday Snapshot ... Getting to Know Ruby

Today is Ruby's seventh day with us.  In that time, we have learned a lot about her, and she is quickly learning what we expect of her.

Yesterday afternoon, we made a discovery.  In her last house (wherever that was ... we don't know, since she was a stray) Ruby must have been allowed to sleep on the furniture.  She has been trying all week to get up onto the sofa with us, and we have never allowed our dogs on the furniture so we would not let her do it.  Yesterday, in the blink of an eye, she hopped up, settled in, and looked totally comfortable and happy.  I looked at The Husband on the other end of the sofa, he looked at me, we both shrugged and decided that we didn't mind having her there.

It was comforting to have her to snuggle with last night.  My face is really swollen from my dental work on Friday, and all I did yesterday was hang out on the couch, ice my face, read blogs, and watch TV.  (Getting used to this seemingly-enormous gap in my smile, and the stupid little temporary denture tooth is difficult, and I'm trying not to be crabby about it.)  It's as if Ruby knows this and is doing her best to make it better.

The cats are a bit out of sorts with this interloper invading what they think is THEIR territory.  Alice and Maggie are sort of okay with it, as long as Ruby stays on HER side of the lap and doesn't move too much or touch them.  Dorothy is still leery of Ruby, but she's getting better.

"I can't believe you're letting a DOG up onto the sofa," says Alice.

As I sat here earlier this morning, with a cat on one side of my lap and Ruby on the other, I was contemplating a bit of furniture rearranging.  Later today, we'll move things around and see if my idea works.

Happy Sunday, Everyone!  I hope you have someone you love to snuggle with.

  1. Good luck with your new dog. Your cat looks just like ours...I keep throws on my furniture to help me fight the cat hair...easy to take off and wash. It's an on going battle, cleaning with cat hair.:):) Smiles to all of you, Susie(SheJunks)

  4. Isn't it funny how the rules can change in the blink of an eye? You can easily find a very pretty throw, washable, and keep it there just for her.

    Feel better soon!

  5. I think you are going to have to lengthen her name to Ruby Ruler Of The Roost! just sayin....

I love how she has become an old shoe in your family already! xo Diana

  6. Hi Connie
I love this post about the relaxing of rules! Seeing your picture of Ruby in a state of 'sofa bliss' was heartwarming. Personally, I don't think there is anything more comforting than a sleepy, relaxed dog nestled up with you on the sofa, especially when you have toothache (or any other bad thing).
Hope you're feeling better soon! Hugs from Wales.

  7. Thanks for allowing Ruby to cuddle on the couch. It's only fitting since she is a ,couch potato. Her rescue group has heard about your blog and I'm sure you will be getting a few new followers. Feel better, Con. xoxo Susan

  8. We always said our dogs wouldn't be allowed on the furniture, but somehow they managed it! At one point we had three dogs, I was on one sofa with one of them, another was stretched out along a second sofa and the third in the armchair. Husband came in, looked around, then sat on the floor!

  12. Oh Connie, she is just too cute and cuddly not to let up on the sofa! I understand how you feel about not having dogs on the sofa but I think Ruby is going to change your mind! So you finally got the tooth done?? I am feeling for you right now! We have been pretty close in time with both of our procedures. Last night I took a bite of salad and my temporary bridge fell out and so after dinner I went to the drugstore, picked up the adhesive to put it back in and later that evening as I was fitting it back into my mouth, one of the caps broke right off! Aaagg! Now I have to call the dentist tomorrow and see what can be done before my impressions are done on the 20th. I was wondering how I was getting away with this thing for this long! I hope your discomfort has subsided some today. I am thinking of you!~Hugs, Patti

  15. Bless Ruby! Here she is trying to make a place for herself without making too much of a fuss and those darn cats don't want to share. Seriously, you'd think that they own the place!! ;)

  16. Oh, I absolutely love your blog and these pictures of the animals are just the best.
They certainly can capture your heart and rule the roost. Our cat, Melvin, does just that.

  17. What an adorable photo of sweet Ruby, Connie! She looks so content. :) We always buckled to the big brown eyes....and allowed all of our furbabies on the furniture. We just keep throws on everything - til company comes over! lol!
