Greenhouse: Progress on the North Wall

The installation of the windows in my greenhouse is moving along at a steady pace.  The weather has been super favorable for spending afternoons outside doing construction ... for that, I am thankful.

It took two days to get to this point on the north wall.  Prepping the windows themselves, by scraping the loose paint, and sanding them relatively smooth with my palm sander, takes quite a bit of time when one is dealing with 20 windows.  The scraping and sanding, along with the installation of the vertical trim pieces, is all I got accomplished on Wednesday.

With everything prepped and ready to go for start-of-work on Thursday, visible progress came at a lightning pace.  At the end of the day, the greenhouse's north wall looked like this.

Surprisingly, I'm still using the stash of windows that came from ONE house ... but this wall will finish them off.  There are three rows of windows on this wall because the windows I have left to use are not as tall as the ones on the other two walls.

On the south and west walls, the bottom row of windows is hinged for ventilation.  On this wall, it's the center row of windows that has the hinges ...  so I can keep my bench installed on that wall and not have it interfere with opening the windows.

Today is drizzly and a bit chilly.  The rain is supposed to clear by about lunchtime, so I can probably get this wall finished by this evening.

I will feature this next week. It is such a great project and I love that you recycled old windows. Not only that it is beautiful to boot! Wish I had your skills I would make one of my own!

  5. Geneva, sweetheart, you didn't leave your email, so I couldn't send you this reply personally.

If you are considering building a greenhouse, build the largest one you can ... smaller definitely isn't better when it comes to garden sheds OR greenhouses. If you build a small one, you will quickly outgrow it. One over-wintering banana tree, plus a rack of seedlings for spring planting, and you could be out of capacity.

  17. Oh my gosh, anticipation....I love the random sizing of the windows, too me that really means reuser! Gonna have to get Mr. Green Jeans (Art) to get busy! We have lots and lots of original windows from our house and the "helps" cabin next door. We could have an amazing green house with those! Thanks for the inspiration!
