On The Mend

Shortly after we returned from dropping our middle daughter at the airport on Monday evening, my throat began to feel scratchy.  By Tuesday morning, I could barely swallow.  Our youngest daughter had been to the doctor for a sore throat on Thursday before the wedding, only to discover that it was viral and had to run its course.  I assume, generous child that she is, that she shared her germs with me.

I woke up at 2am on Wednesday, sneezing, blowing my nose, coughing, and feeling really, really crappy.  I got out of bed, so I didn't disturb The Husband, and I took to the couch in the family room.  There I remained until dinnertime last night.  Yes, folks, I was one with the couch for almost two full days.

Alice, on my ever-present green down throw, keeping an eye on me.

Most of you have already figured out that I am a ball of energy and perpetual motion, with multiple projects going on at the same time, so finding me in the same spot for almost 48 straight hours is completely unheard of.  Even if I don't feel well, I usually push through it.  This time, already worn down by wedding plans and other causes of general exhaustion and stress, the virus took hold and I was DOWN.

On the bright side, if I had to get sick and be forced to stay inside, having it happen during a heat wave was pretty good timing.  The couch is really comfortable.  I have my laptop nearby, and the TV remote.  (daytime TV really sucks, have you noticed?)  All of the cats and dogs have been taking turns keeping me company.  The cats seem especially glad to have me around.

Maggie and Dorothy, napping with me.

This morning, I feel much better ... well enough to take my coffee cup with me and check on the garden and the greenhouse a little while ago.  I still can't get too far from a tissue box, but at least I'm not blowing my nose quite as frequently as I have been.  (I would like to thank the folks at P&G for inventing Puffs Plus tissues.  I am almost halfway through my THIRD box of them.  If I were using regular tissues, I imagine my nose would be in pretty sorry shape by now.)

I'm still going to take it easy for the rest of today.  I have a few things that I would like to get done outside, nothing strenuous and I can work in the shade in short spurts if necessary ... and I'm going to be careful not to overdo it.

  1. So glad to hear you are feeling better. Yes 42 hours on the couch means you are sick! and yes daytime TV sucks! Rest, recoup and then do some work! hugs, Linda

  2. What a blessing that you weren't sick during the wedding! Your box of Puff's Plus might not have matched your dress!

  3. Feel better! When I was in Grad school it was inevitable that the the day after the last class for the semester, I'd get sick as a dog. And I know I'll end up sick after this benefit on Saturday. Once whatever stressful event you're focused on is over, it's like your body just decides to revolt and take a few days to MAKE you relax.

  4. I agree with Deb, you were probably overdue for R&R, and this way your body is shouting " I have had enough, sit down woman" Glad to hear you are on the way up though.

  5. I had the same illness you did, in May and had to cancel an airplane trip to Wisconsin, I was so weak. If you have the energy look at my blog post of a rose bush and see if you can think what rose it might be. I planted it so long ago that I forgot!
Your cats are such darling nurses.

  7. Glad you are feeling better, I've been thinking about you! And I'm glad your sweet furry babies have been keeping "mom" company. Now, why is it that I have a sneaking suspicion that you will over do it?! Maybe because I know you! Just rest and enjoy the down time, you deserve it after all the work you've done over the past few months...umm years! Ok, now back to the garage for me!

  9. This was J last week! After going full force for two years,{in school 5 days a week, home to barn chores, weekend barn & home chores, taking of me and things like grocery shopping etc., when I cannot,} he just fell into bed last weekend and slept through until Monday at 2pm! He felt horrible. Sore throat and body, headache and on and on :(

Sometimes are bodies can only carry on for so long.
Yours was telling you~Enough, Connie! Stay still for a while :)

Love how our *kids* keep us company when we feel punky! Yours are too cute!
Don't do too much-you do not want a relapse! That is an order!!

  13. Dearest Connie,

    Glad you're on the mend.
Isn't feline love wonderful?! They don't mind to have their human parent for once napping together with them!
Hope you fluff back soon and wishing you a great weekend.

  14. Hi Connie, Have you ever tried zinc tablets to get over a cold? The trick is to start taking 1 a day when you first get that scratchy feeling in your throat. At least it can't hurt.

  15. Sorry to hear you have been ill but glad to hear you are on the mend. Oh how I love Puffs Plus! the last time I was sick I discovered (by accident) that they now have a tissue with Vicks! I was not expecting that when I grabbed a tissue to blow my nose!

    Your cats are gorgeous!

  20. I'm so glad that you're feeling better, Connie! I went through that same thing earlier this spring - and don't know how I would'ave gotten through it without my Puffs Plus! Those things are wonderful, aren't they? Got my 'White Cap' roses today and they'll be planted tomorrow! :)

  21. Good news, you're feeling better! Dave has had a cold this week and I've had the grippe...meaning Father Time has had a hold and wouldn't let go. I'm headed away for a three nighter, that should help the sleep deprivation and that should help everything else.
do yourself a favor and get a t.v. recorder...can't remember what it's called but it records what you want to watch so you can watch it when you want. wonderful!

  22. Oh- It is from being just plain worn down from all the festivities that left your immune system in a lowered state, don't you think? I am like you- I never get sick but if I do..I am SICK!

You will be your old, ambitious self by the end of the week! Take good care- Diana

  23. yes, do take it easy and slow, because cold viruses do seem to hang around until it runs its course..So do relax....

I know that it's hard to when there are things you what to complete, but you will be well in plenty of time to get things done..

    Godspeed...

  24. Wondered where you were. You didn't pop up on my sidebar.... thought perhaps you were recouping from that lovely wedding. Sorry to hear I was wrong and that it was a bug keeping you away.

I like being on the couch when I am feeling ill too. Don't like to be away from all the action in our house... LOL
